It is recommended to see your GP to talk about the possibility of getting a Mental Health Care Plan prior to seeing a psychologist. You don't need a referral from a GP to see a psychologist, but it can be much more affordable to get a Mental Health Care Plan.
With a Mental Health Care Plan you will be eligible for 10 Medicare funded sessions per calendar year and will receive a $128.40 Medicare Rebate per session.
With the Medicare rebate of $128.40, you will be out of pocket $66.60 per session.
Private Health Insurance rebates may be available if you are not to using a Mental Health Care Plan or have finished your plan.
